The Department is committed to improve academically and in order to develop graduates with strong academic and technical backgrounds backed wit appropriate skills and competencies needed to achieve excellence in the areas of Epidemiology and Community Health

Mission Statement

To provide a conducive environment for learning, research and community service.and produce doctors and other health professionals that are worthy in learning and character.

(E). Opportunities

1). Train students to be self-confident and competent in the field of Epidemiology and Community Health. 2). Develop students with problem solving skills. Develop students with ability to proffer solutions to public health emergencies both nationally and internationally  

3). Produce postgraduate students with ability to handle undergraduate and postgraduate academic work with little or no supervision. 4). Produce students with capacity to mentor other junior students. 5). Train students to develop confidence in solving problems in all areas of public health

(F). Functions of the Department include but not limited to:

1. Teaching the subject of Epidemiology and Community Health as part of requirements for MBBS programme.

2. Clinical training of undergraduate and resident doctors in the subspecialty of Community Medicine and Public Health.

3. Assessment of the understanding of the subjects under Epidemiology and Community Health through continuous assessment, end of posting exam, log-book signing of work done and professional MBBS examinations (Written & MSQ, OSPE, OSCE & Oral).

4. Participation in Public health researches.

5. Field posting to clinics, companies, NGOs and agencies (local, national and international) for public health exposure.

6. Participation in clinical teaching during consultants’ clinics days.

7. Organize regular seminars and proposal presentations as part of training of undergraduate, resident doctors and continuous professional development of its staff

8. Support all public health related issues in the University and the community at large.

9. Support emergency preparedness and response to disease outbreaks

10. Compile and submit annual report of its activities to the University authority.

11. Expose medical students, postgraduate students and resident doctors to public health and other medical professional activities through filed posting and call duty

12. Provision of health care services at the teaching hospital and community level

13. Provision of community health care outreach services through rural and urban sites at Okelele & Esie Comprehensive health centers, Ihima and Idisin health centers etc

14. Pre-employment screening services

15. Support occupational health services through collaboration and MOU with industrial companies like OLAM , Dangote cement factory etc
